Bonus Assignment: Ask a Librarian Chat

I conversed with a librarian from San Francisco Bay Area named Ronna who helped guided me in several ways with my question of finding prominent researchers in my topic for the HCP. She showed me how to utilize UC Irvine's research guide more effectively rather than randomly typing in words and hoping for some decent results to appear. She instructed me on some basic keywords and how they could be changed up a bit to yield more specific articles. In addition, she found an article for me that had a good resource of authors and a very useful article about pig cognition as well.

Although most of the advice she gave was already covered in the research presentation , it was good to have the information as a refresher and it was generally encouraging to find that there was a professional readily available to talk to if I needed any help any time.

Below is the transcript of our conversation:

Chat Transcript: I am currently doing a review of scientific literature for the Historical Conversations Project for my Writing 39C course. My topic is farm animal intelligence, and I am specifically focusing on pig cognition. I am having trouble finding prominent researchers in this field of study and I would like to know more studies done by them.

24/7 Librarian Ronna: Librarian '24/7 Librarian Ronna' has joined the session.

24/7 Librarian Ronna:

Hello, I'm a librarian in the San Francisco Bay Area, California, and am part of the chat service consortium which includes your library. There might be delays if I'm helping others. One minute, please...

24/7 Librarian Ronna: Hi Annie

24/7 Librarian Ronna: For starters I'm looking at your library's research guide for Writing 39C:

24/7 Librarian Ronna:http://guides.lib.uci.edu/w39c

24/7 Librarian Ronna: Were you assigned the topic?

Annie Duong: Yes! I have used this source. However, I am required to find a few names that repeatedly occur and over again when looking up my topic.

Annie Duong: My topic is pig cognition.

Annie Duong: Under Loving animals

24/7 Librarian Ronna: OK, you might start with your library's onesearch across resources on the home page:

24/7 Librarian Ronna:http://www.lib.uci.edu/

24/7 Librarian Ronna: Start by simply searching for PIG COGNITION

24/7 Librarian Ronna: Although the first result is related to guinea pigs, not pigs :)

24/7 Librarian Ronna: Please change PIG to PIGS

24/7 Librarian Ronna: Then click on the link to Melvyl

Annie Duong: Okay. What search engine am I using?

24/7 Librarian Ronna: Here's one result:

24/7 Librarian Ronna:http://uci.worldcat.org/title/welfare-of -pigs/oclc/314175062

24/7 Librarian Ronna: Your library's onesearch across resources on the home page:http://www.lib.uci.edu/

Annie Duong: Oh I see! Thank you very much.

24/7 Librarian Ronna: You're very welcome, glad to help.

24/7 Librarian Ronna: In that one result, if you scroll down you'll see names of authors contributing to that particular publication.

Annie Duong: Okay! Is there a way I may just search the reserachers name and find articles written by them?

24/7 Librarian Ronna: You can try that in the onesearch on the home page as well

Newest Message

24/7 Librarian Ronna: You could also change your search from COGNITION to INTELLIGENCE

Annie Duong: I see! Thank you so much.
